The 7-day Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and well-acclimatised treks up Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning on the remote western side of the mountain. Starting at Londorossi Gate, trekkers journey through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp before emerging onto the expansive Shira Plateau. The trail continues eastward to Shira 2, then ascends to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp, aiding acclimatization. From there, climbers tackle the Barranco Wall, trek through Karanga Valley, and reach Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push. After a midnight ascent, trekkers reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and descend via Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. The route offers breathtaking views, diverse ecosystems, and a high summit success rate due to its gradual ascent profile.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Distance: 11 km Hiking Time: ~3 hours Zone: Rainforest
Depart from Moshi or Arusha and drive to Londorossi Gate for registration and entry formalities. From there, continue by vehicle for about an hour through a forest track to Lemosho Glades. After lunch, begin your trek along lush forest trails leading to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira Camp 1
Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: ~7 hours Zone: Moorland
The trail climbs steadily out of the rainforest and into a moorland zone with giant heathers. As you ascend through scenic hills and cross mountain streams, you’ll reach Shira Ridge and descend slightly to arrive at Shira Camp 1. Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak from the plateau.
Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2
Distance: 6 km Hiking Time: ~2 hours Zone: Moorland
Take an easy trek across the Shira Plateau to Shira Camp 2, nestled near a stream on open moorland. Today is ideal for acclimatization, with optional short walks on the plateau—one of the highest of its kind in the world.
Day 4: Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Distance: 7 km Hiking Time: 6–8 hours Zone: Semi-desert
Continue eastward across the plateau, heading toward Lava Tower (4,630m), a prominent volcanic formation also known as the Shark’s Tooth. After reaching Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp. Though you start and end the day at a similar elevation, this “climb high, sleep low” day is key for altitude acclimatization.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Distance: 9 km Hiking Time: ~8 hours Zone: Alpine Desert
Begin with a short scramble up the Barranco Wall, then traverse a series of ridges and valleys below the icefalls of the southern glaciers. Pause at Karanga Camp for a break before continuing upward to Barafu Camp. Here, you'll rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt. Views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks are stunning from this high camp.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent Hiking Time: 7–8 hours up / 4–6 hours down Zone: Arctic
Start the final push around midnight, trekking up steep switchbacks toward the crater rim between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers. Reach Stella Point at sunrise, then continue along the rim for about an hour to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue past Millennium Camp to Mweka Camp. For those with extra energy, there's an option to visit the Reutsh Crater and Eastern Icefields en route.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate—Return to Moshi/Arusha
Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Zone: Rainforest
Enjoy a final breakfast before descending through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate. From there, continue on foot to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to return you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
