Clothing (Layer Up!)
Base Layers: Moisture-wicking shirts and leggings to keep sweat off your skin.
Insulating Layers: Fleece jacket or a warm mid-layer for chilly nights.
Outer Layers: Waterproof, windproof jacket and pants—rain is common, especially in the lower zones.
Summit Gear: Down jacket, thermal gloves, balaclava, and a warm hat for the frigid peak.
Extras: 4–5 pairs of socks (wool or synthetic), underwear, a lightweight trekking outfit, and a comfy camp outfit.
Footwear
Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with ankle support.
Gaiters to keep mud and scree out.
Camp shoes (like flip-flops or lightweight sneakers) for downtime.
Sleeping Gear
A 4-season sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C (14°F)—nights get cold!
Sleeping pad (often provided by tour operators, but check).
Small inflatable pillow for extra comfort.
Daypack Essentials
25–35L daypack for your daily carry (porters handle the rest).
Water bottles or hydration system (3L capacity—stay hydrated!).
Snacks (energy bars, nuts, dried fruit).
Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm with SPF—UV rays are brutal up high.
Headlamp with extra batteries for summit night.
Miscellaneous
Trekking poles (a lifesaver for knees on the descent).
First-aid kit (blister patches, painkillers, personal meds).
Toiletries (biodegradable soap, toothbrush, wet wipes—showers are rare).
Quick-dry towel.
Camera or phone for those epic summit pics.
Go Light, But Don’t Skimp
Stick to the porter’s weight limit, but prioritize warmth and waterproofing. You can rent gear like sleeping bags or jackets locally if needed.
Layering is King
Dress in layers you can shed or add as the temperature shifts. Versatility beats bulk every time.
Pack for Wet and Dry
Use dry bags or plastic liners to keep gear dry in rain, and pack a spare set of clothes for emergencies.
Test Your Gear
Wear your boots and pack at home first—no one wants blisters at 4,000 meters.
Respect the Mountain
Pack out all trash. Kilimanjaro’s beauty depends on climbers keeping it pristine.
1. Cotton Clothing
Avoid cotton (like t-shirts, jeans, socks) – it retains moisture and doesn’t insulate when wet, increasing the risk of hypothermia.
2. Heavy or Bulky Gear
No need for overly heavy boots, giant backpacks, or thick wool coats. Opt for lightweight, high-performance gear instead.
3. Valuables or Jewelry
Leave expensive items like jewelry, watches, or unnecessary electronics at home to avoid loss or theft.
4. Drones
Drones are not allowed in Tanzanian national parks without a special permit.
5. Unsealed Snacks
Avoid bringing snacks with strong smells or those that may attract rodents or insects. Keep everything sealed and pack out trash.
6. Alcohol & Drugs
These are prohibited and dangerous at high altitude. Alcohol can increase dehydration and altitude sickness risk.
7. Overly Scented Products
Skip perfumes, colognes, and strong-smelling lotions – they can attract bugs and irritate other hikers.
8. Fashion Clothing or City Shoes
No need for jeans, dress shoes, or fancy clothing – practicality and function are key.
9. Big Luggage or Suitcases
Use a soft duffel bag for porters to carry and a small daypack for personal items.
10. Books or Gear You Won’t Use
Limit unnecessary weight. If you’re not sure you’ll use it, leave it.
