Facts About Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing

Clothing (Layer Up!)

  • Base Layers: Moisture-wicking shirts and leggings to keep sweat off your skin.

  • Insulating Layers: Fleece jacket or a warm mid-layer for chilly nights.

  • Outer Layers: Waterproof, windproof jacket and pants—rain is common, especially in the lower zones.

  • Summit Gear: Down jacket, thermal gloves, balaclava, and a warm hat for the frigid peak.

  • Extras: 4–5 pairs of socks (wool or synthetic), underwear, a lightweight trekking outfit, and a comfy camp outfit.

Footwear

  • Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with ankle support.

  • Gaiters to keep mud and scree out.

  • Camp shoes (like flip-flops or lightweight sneakers) for downtime.

Sleeping Gear

  • A 4-season sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C (14°F)—nights get cold!

Daypack Essentials

  • 25–35L daypack for your daily carry (porters handle the rest).
