Unwind in Zanzibar.
The Spice Island is where a Tanzania adventure comes to rest. Powder-white sand, warm turquoise water, world-class diving and kitesurfing, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian history in Stone Town. The ideal reward after the summit of Kilimanjaro.
1. Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar: One Perfect Trip
Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are the brother and sister of Tanzanian travel. After the effort of climbing Africa's highest peak, most of our climbers make their way straight to the coast to let the body recover in the warm Indian Ocean. The contrast is the whole point: adrenaline and altitude one week, turquoise water and white sand the next.
It is the complete Tanzania in a single journey, the snow-capped summit and the coral reef. Go Kilimanjaro Treks designs packages that combine both experiences seamlessly, handling the flights, transfers, and hotels so you step off the mountain and onto the beach without a hitch. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a first-timer, it is the trip of a lifetime.
2. Choosing Your Beach
Zanzibar is bigger than most people expect, and each coast has its own character. Picking the right base matters.
- Paje (southeast). Long, wide white sand and steady wind make Paje the island's kitesurfing capital. A reef-protected lagoon keeps the water calm for learning, and the scene is relaxed and backpacker-friendly with good beachfront cafes.
- Kendwa (north). Often called the most beautiful beach on the island, with powdery sand and turquoise water that stays swimmable at every tide. More resort-led and lively, with famous sunsets.
- Nungwi (northwest). The traditional heart of dhow building, with calm shallow water and fresh seafood served right on the sand. Nungwi North keeps a more rustic, local feel.
- Stone Town (west). A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the historic quarter of Zanzibar City. Wander the maze of alleys to the Old Fort, the Palace Museum, and the poignant Old Slave Market, then eat your way through the Forodhani Gardens night market.
3. World-Class Marine Sports
Warm water (25 to 29°C year-round) and healthy reefs make Zanzibar a paradise for the water.
- Diving and snorkelling. Mnemba Atoll is the premier spot, a conservation zone of coral walls and shallow gardens with green turtles, dolphins, reef sharks, and clouds of reef fish. Leven Bank offers deep dives for the experienced. PADI courses run around Nungwi and Kendwa.
- Kitesurfing and windsurfing. The Kuzi wind blows June to September and the Kaskazi from December to February. Paje's shallow lagoon suits beginners and advanced riders alike, while Kiwengwa's open water rewards stronger windsurfers.
- Deep-sea fishing. The Pemba Channel draws serious anglers from June to October, with blue and black marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado, and wahoo. Half and full-day charters are easy to arrange.
- Relaxed water time. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the calm Pongwe lagoon and the Michamvi mangroves, and the classic sunset dhow cruise as the sun drops into the ocean.
4. The Classic 7-Day Zanzibar Itinerary
A minimum of seven days lets you see the island's full range. Ten days gives a more relaxed pace.
Day 1: Stone Town. Arrive and transfer to Stone Town. Wander the UNESCO alleys, visit the Old Fort, catch sunset on the waterfront, and dine at the Forodhani night market.
Day 2: History and spices. A morning boat to Prison Island for the giant tortoises and snorkelling, then a guided spice-farm tour in the afternoon.
Day 3: Jozani and The Rock. Travel southeast, walk the boardwalks of Jozani Forest for the rare red colobus monkeys, lunch at the famous Rock Restaurant, then on to Paje for the evening.
Day 4: Paje beach. A full day on the sand. Take a beginner kitesurfing lesson or simply watch the kites, explore the tidal pools, and enjoy the beach-bar scene.
Day 5: Safari Blue. A full-day boat excursion in Menai Bay with snorkelling, natural lagoons, sandbanks, and a huge seafood barbecue lunch.
Day 6: Northern beaches. Move to Kendwa or Nungwi for pristine sand and all-tide swimming, and finish with a sunset dhow cruise.
Day 7: Mnemba and departure. A morning boat to Mnemba Atoll for world-class snorkelling among turtles and coral, then back to freshen up before your flight.
5. Zanzibar Seafood
The island's cooking blends Swahili, Arab, Indian, and African influences, and seafood is at its heart. Look for octopus curry simmered in fragrant coconut milk, grilled fish marinated in turmeric, ginger, and garlic, prawn curry, and grilled lobster with garlic butter. The full Zanzibar seafood platter brings lobster, prawns, crab, calamari, and fresh fish together with rice, chips, and salad.
For the setting as much as the food, the Rock Restaurant sits on its own outcrop in the sea off Michamvi Pingwe. On the beaches, try the seafood grills at Kendwa and Nungwi, and in Stone Town eat by the water at Forodhani or on the spice-scented rooftop of Emerson on Hurumzi. Many boat trips, including Safari Blue and the Mnemba excursions, cook fresh seafood right on the sandbank or the boat.
6. Practical Travel Information
- Best time to visit. June to October is cooler, dry, and clear, and best for combining with a mainland climb or safari. December to March is hotter and great for winter sun. April and May bring the long rains, cheaper and quieter but wet.
- Getting around. Taxis are widely available (agree the fare first), and the Bolt app works on the island. Local dala-dala minibuses are cheap but slow. Car hire is possible with a temporary Zanzibar permit, usually arranged by the rental company.
- Visa and entry. Most visitors need a Tanzania visa (50 USD, apply online in advance). Since late 2024 Zanzibar also requires mandatory inbound travel insurance (44 USD) before arrival. We help you sort both.
Zanzibar FAQ
Why combine Zanzibar with a Kilimanjaro climb?
Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro are the ideal pairing. After the physical demands of Africa's highest peak, Zanzibar's warm turquoise water and white sand are the perfect place to rest and recover. You get the full range of Tanzania in one trip, from a snow-capped summit to an Indian Ocean beach, and Go Kilimanjaro Treks designs packages that combine both seamlessly.
Which Zanzibar beach is best for me?
Paje on the southeast coast is the kitesurfing hub, with a protected lagoon and a laid-back atmosphere. Kendwa on the north coast is swimmable at any tide with lively sunsets and resorts. Nungwi nearby is the traditional dhow-building village with calm shallow water and fresh seafood on the sand. Stone Town on the west coast is the historic UNESCO quarter, best for culture rather than swimming.
What is the best place to snorkel or dive in Zanzibar?
Mnemba Atoll is the premier snorkelling and diving location, a marine conservation zone with coral walls and shallow gardens where you can encounter green sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins, reef sharks, and colourful reef fish. Advanced divers head to Leven Bank for deep dives and large pelagic fish. Visibility around the island commonly ranges from 10 to 30 metres.
When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is a year-round destination. June to October is cooler and dry with clear skies, and is also the best time to combine the island with a mainland safari or climb. December to March is hotter and ideal for escaping the northern winter. April and May are the long-rains season, cheaper and quieter but with high humidity and frequent heavy downpours.
Do I need a visa and insurance for Zanzibar?
Most visitors need a Tanzania visa, which costs 50 USD and should be applied for online in advance. Since late 2024, Zanzibar also requires all tourists to buy a mandatory inbound travel insurance policy, currently 44 USD, before arrival. We help you get both sorted as part of planning your trip.
How many days should I spend in Zanzibar?
We recommend a minimum of 7 days to experience the island's mix of history, culture, beaches, and marine life at a comfortable pace. Ten days allows a more relaxed rhythm with extra beach time or additional diving.
